A sunlit sanctuary in Safety Harbor: joy as our foundation

On Saturday, February 7, under the warm afternoon sun and Spanish moss of Safety Harbor, our park pavilion transformed into an open-air sanctuary of belonging. Hosted in close coalition between TransNetwork and PFLAG Safety Harbor & Greater Pinellas, the 3rd Annual Trans & Ally Community Picnic brought together more than 140 trans and nonbinary neighbors, questioning youth, parents, caregivers, and vocal allies.

In a time when public rhetoric across Florida so often attempts to isolate transgender individuals and their families, carving out a space dedicated entirely to ease, laughter, and community care is an act of quiet resilience. Honored with 3rd place in the Watermark Out Awards for Best Trans-Affirming Event, this annual gathering has become a cornerstone of our collective calendar, proving that when community comes together with intention, joy becomes our strongest anchor.

Community care in action: fed, sheltered, and surrounded by love

From the moment set-up began at noon, the pavilion bustled with the practical mutual aid that defines our work. To protect the peace and safety of every attendee, location details were coordinated intentionally through confidential RSVPs. Volunteers unpacked boxes of hot pizza, stacks of fresh fruit and snacks, cold drinks, and urns of hot cocoa, cider, and fresh coffee.

Nobody was asked to buy a ticket, show an ID, or pay for lunch. Mutual aid means ensuring every family is fed and every person has a place at the table. Around the picnic benches, parents navigating their child's recent coming out connected with seasoned chapter elders, trading practical local recommendations for affirming providers, sharing school navigation tips, or simply sitting in comfortable, non-judgmental company.

Speaking up and showing up: claiming the park with color and play

Throughout the afternoon, the pavilion and surrounding lawns came alive with multigenerational creativity. Armed with buckets of sidewalk chalk, kids, teens, and adults covered the stone pathways with vibrant trans pride flags, pastel murals, and messages of solidarity and love. In the trees overhead, strings of blue, pink, and white flags fluttered in the breeze, establishing an unmistakable perimeter of safety and affirmation.

Inside the pavilion, community speakers and organizers, including Ant and Lizzie, took to the microphone to welcome newcomers, share grassroots resources, and reaffirm our coalition’s shared mission. Across the grass, youth climbed sprawling live oaks, tossed lawn games, and blew streams of iridescent bubbles that floated past picnic blankets. An afternoon highlight was gathering everyone together under the trees for a massive, smiling group photo, arms wrapped around chosen family, pride banners held high in broad daylight.

Looking ahead: rooted in love, unshakeable in purpose

We do not gather to retreat from the world; we gather so that no member of our community ever has to face the world alone. Seeing over 140 people show up with open hearts and picnic blankets reminds us that community is not an abstract concept; it is an active practice of showing up, setting the tables, and holding each other close. Safety Harbor and Greater Pinellas remain vibrant, loving homes for trans and queer youth, adults, and families, and we are here to stay.
